Competency 5.2
Credit and respect the rights of others
Boundary everything that involves others — peers, rights holders, audiences, communities. The economic dimension of partnerships (negotiation, contracts) belongs to the Monetise domain.
Definition
Using the work of others legally and fairly: quotation, licences, remix, systematic credit. The mirror of competency 7.2 (protecting your own rights): you can only demand respect for your creations by respecting those of others. A founding competency for a remix culture that is legally and ethically sustainable.
Components
- The right of quotation: conditions, limits, differences across media
- Usage licences: Creative Commons, royalty-free libraries, commercial licences
- Remix culture: transformation, parody, inspiration — and their legal limits
- Credit and attribution: crediting systematically, correctly, visibly
- Plagiarism against inspiration: where the line runs
- AI-generated work derived from existing works: specific points of vigilance
